3 Ideas for the adventurous
take a hot air balloon tour
What could be better than seeing San Miguel and the surrounding valley from the vantage point of a hot air balloon? There are a handful of hot air balloon companies in San Miguel - we recommend Globo San Miguel. Owner Jay Kimball was a pioneer of commercial ballooning in the Napa Valley before moving on to open flight corridors in Lake Tahoe, Del Mar and then San Miguel. Globo San Miguel's pilots are FAA certified and their equipment is inspected regularly at FAA designated repair stations. They belong to several voluntary organizations which set standards for ballooning, including the Balloon Federation of America and the Professional Balloon Pilots Association of Napa County and the National Balloon Association of Mexico. The hot air balloons launch just after dawn when the winds are at their calmest and the temperatures are the coolest. Flights typically last about an hour. The baskets hold up to 8 passengers. You can fly with other people, or you can reserve the entire balloon for just your group. See their website for more information and reservation details.
take a tour on an all-terrain vehicle
ATV's are a common mode of transportation in the streets of San Miguel. There are several companies in town who rent ATVs by the hour (either for 2 passengers or for 4). Zipping around town in an ATV is an exhilarating way to see the city. We do it often when we have out-of-town guests. There are several companies that also offer guided ATV tours. San Miguel Rent-a-Car offers a menu of guided ATV tours, including one to panoramic viewpoints around San Miguel de Allende, a chapel tour and several others. You can reserve your tour through their website. Bicentarios Todo Terreno also offers various types of ATV tours, including some "extreme adventure" tours that take you through river bottoms on the old trails surrounding San Miguel. They have one safari vehicle that seats up to 16 people. They offer guided tours of surrounding areas in the vehicle, including one that takes you inside a dormant volcano. You can arrange a tour with them by emailing them at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Horseback riding through the hills, canyons and rivers surrounding San Miguel is a very popular activity. There are several companies that offer tours on horseback. Leisurely Country Horseback is a great option, in our opinion. Beth Kaestner, the owner, will pick you up and drive you to the ranch at Boca de Canada. They have many different trails for novice, intermediate and experienced riders. Beth and her cowboys will ride with you at your own pace as you enjoy the beautiful countryside. You can see photos of this lovely tour, and make reservations, on her website. Coyote Canyon is a wonderful adventure tour operator that offers a wide array of adventure activities, including some thrilling horseback adventures. They are the only operator licensed to do horseback tours in the center of town. You can do the in-town ride at any time, but it's especially fun at sunset. Check out their tours and reservation process on their website.
