“Experience Dining” in San Miguel: Music, Art & Authenticity
For us, eating out isn’t always all about the food. These restaurants all serve yummy food, in our opinion, but we like them for other reasons too.
*The Food factory
We really like the food at The Food Factory and perhaps we should have listed it in our “Chef Inspired” category of Picks, but we’ve put it in the “Experience” category mostly because of its location at La Aurora (and also because the food there really isn't what we think of as "chef-y" food - meaning that the dishes are not highly experimental, the plates are bountiful and the prices super reasonable). When we have out-of-town company, we enjoy taking them to La Aurora. We wander the 50+ galleries, shops, and working art studios, and we take a break for lunch at The Food Factory. Or we go to the monthly Friday night ArtWalk at La Aurora, and then have dinner at The Food Factory. The owner and chef is Allen Williams, who grew up in Mexico and did his formal culinary training in Switzerland. The menu, which changes seasonally and is brought to your table on a huge chalkboard, is diverse and always good. The decor is European bistro-y, and the waitstaff are great. We have never had a bad meal there. It's a small restaurant so we recommend reservations on ArtWalk night, and anytime for large groups.

This restaurant has been quite the novelty destination since it opened in 2007. The restaurant is on the first floor of Felix’s home, where he has set up tables and chairs in the living room and dining room, and in his backyard. The food is traditional Mexican fare served at your table by Felix and his family members, including the kids. (The whole family is dressed in little white chef coats with their logo embroidered on them.) Felix is a super friendly host. We really like the enchiladas. A lot of people think they're the best in town - and they probably are. The tacos are good too, of course. You’ll want to take a taxi to Tacos Don Felix because it’s in a hard to find spot in a neighborhood where there aren't many businesses. Reservations are highly recommended because this is a very popular place.
Hours: Fri and Sat, from 6 to midnight. Sunday, 2 - 9:30 p.m.
